TRESemmé Future Stylists Fund Supports Black Hairstylists
A 2020 study found that 86% of Black women report challenges when trying to find quality haircare at salons. Not only that, but many also reported discrimination towards their hair types. 75% of stylists said they wish they had more training in how to style Black hair types. Very few cosmetology schools require training in textured hair. The consequences are clear: Black women aren’t getting the quality hair care they deserve. This second installment of TRESemmé’s three-part action plan includes a partnership with a textured hair expert. The goal is to make education on how to care for and style textured hair more accessible. This curriculum will be available in early 2022.
TRESemmé Future Stylists Fund
Not only that, but through October 10, 2021, aspiring Black stylists can apply to the TRESemmé Future Stylists Fund. 10 recipients will have access to $10,000 towards tuition to an accredited cosmetology school, access to career-advancing opportunities that include exposure through TRESemmé brand channels and coaching from pro stylists, and exposure and mentorship, as well. Celebrity stylists and activists on the selection committee include Meagan Good, Lacy Redway, Nai’vasha, Sandrine Charles, and Esi Eggleston Bracey. “Every Black woman, even a famous actress, has experienced bias in the salon chair, whether that means we’ve been charged extra because of our hair type or received inadequate service by a professional inexperienced with textured hair,” says Meagan Good. “I am so proud to team up with TRESemmé to ensure women – both stylists and those in their chairs – provide and receive superior service no matter their hair type or skin color.”
