The Japanese Red Cross reports sending out “62 NDRTs (National Disaster Response Teams) with more than 400 staffs including Doctors, Nurses, Admins sent to the affected areas for Assessment, First Aid, Health, possible PS (Psychological Support Programme).” The American Red Cross is providing shelter, provisions and comfort to those in Hawaii and the West Coast who were forced to evacuate their homes. Save the Children has announced that it has sent emergency response teams to support the needs of children and their families in the worst affected areas between Miyagi Prefecture and Tokyo. Zynga, Inc., an online social game manufacturer most known for creating the popular facebook game Farmville, has teamed up with Save the Children to raise funds by offering its players the chance to donate 100% of the purchase price of select virtual items to relief efforts. International Medical Corps has deployed response teams to offer essential medical attention and supplies to victims. The Salvation Army is on the ground in Japan offering basic necessities to survivors. Doctors Without Borders has sent teams to remote areas of affected regions to set up emergency clinics. Their press release states that “as they continue their assessments, the teams will focus on the particular needs of more vulnerable populations, including elderly people and young children, as well as people suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.” Shelterbox provides boxes of shelter and lifesaving equipment to those affected by natural disasters. They have sent crews to Japan to assess and respond to the needs of the people.
