How to Curl Hair With a Straightener

Keep scrolling to learn how to curl hair with a straightener.

1. Start with freshly washed hair.

We get it, curling your hair with a straightener can feel intimidating. We mean, it does look complicated, so we don’t blame you. However, achieving these loose, everyday curls isn’t a struggle at all. Follow these simple 5 steps to get the look. This probably isn’t a surprise, but you’ll want to start with clean hair. Use any shampoo and conditioner set that works well for your hair type. But, if you’re not sure where to start, we love Dove Hair Therapy Breakage Remedy Strengthening Shampoo and Conditioner because it helps strengthen your hair at the cellular level and nourishes your strands at the level of the hair cortex. After washing your hair, make sure it’s dry before styling.

2. Apply heat protectant throughout your hair.

Once your hair is completely dry, spray a heat protectant, like TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray throughout your hair. We love this spray because it protects your hair from damage caused by heat styling up to temperatures of 450°F. It’s crucial to protect your hair because it will also help eliminate unwanted breakage. To use, all you have to do is spray 6-8 inches from your head covering the mid-shaft of your hair through the ends. Next, comb through your hair to distribute then you’re ready to start curling.

3. How to curl hair with a straightener: Begin curling hair in sections.

Now, it’s time for the exciting part: actually learning how to curl your hair with a straightener. Begin curling your hair in small 2-inch sections. Start by twisting the piece of hair around the clamp closest to your head. Wrap the piece of hair underneath the clamp and back towards your face so the rest of the length of hair will fall underneath the clamp. This will ensure the curl ends up curling away from your face rather than towards it. After you have your hair in place, drag the straightener down your hair like normal. Once the hair is released you’ll be left with a curl! repeat this on the remaining amount of hair.

4. Style your curls and lock them in place.

Alright, so you have all of your hair curled, it’s time to style and lock the look in place. Gently separate curls to create a softer look by either finger combing or using a wide-tooth comb. After your hair is combed out, lock the style in place with TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Level 2 Hold Curl Hair Spray. This is one of our favorite hair sprays because it holds your style all day without making your hair feel stiff or crunchy. Once your hair is all spritzed, you’re finished with the look!
