Washing hair in sections, twists or even braids are methods a lot of natural haired girls have gotten down to a science. Ahead, we break down how you can easily try these routines at home. Try them out and stick to the hair washing method that works best for you:

1. Wash Hair in Sections

Before beginning the wash routine, use a detangling product like Suave Cream Detangler Spray. Spray the detangler all over hair then finger comb to work it through. Use a wide-tooth or shower comb to continue detangling hair in sections. After completing this process, part hair down the center to create a ponytail on each side. During the hair washing process, wash each section at a time. This method helps prevent your entire head from tangling during the shampooing process.

2. Wash Hair in Braids

Whether you’re cleansing a protective style or not, washing hair in braids is another effective way to wash natural hair while avoiding tangles. If you’re carrying this method out on loose hair, detangle first, then create as many chunky braids as you desire. Go with bigger braids to speed up the take-down process after washing. Smaller braids take a much longer time to remove. Once you have all your braids in, apply shampoo directly to roots, massage it in and rinse completely. Consider gently ringing braids out to make sure the shampoo is completely rinsed out. Repeat this same step with the conditioning routine. Some women opt for drying hair with braids in, but you can also remove your braids during the conditioning process to finger detangle hair. Our suggestion: Do one braid at a time. Undo one braid, rinse, detangle braid again, then move on to the next.

3. Wash Hair in Twists

Washing hair in twists is similar to the braids technique. However, after creating two-strand twists, you may want to secure ends with clips or hair ties to prevent it from untwisting while washing. After twisting and securing your ends, proceed with the wash routine as mentioned above. Editor’s note: After using one the natural hair washing methods listed above, be sure to follow-up with a leave-in conditioner to keep hair moisturized and easy to style. Some of our favorites include Suave Professionals Honey Infusion 10-in-1 Leave-in Conditioner and Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Heat Defense Leave-in Conditioner. Both products will leave your hair super soft and prepared for heat styling. Try these different wash methods and see which one leaves you with healthy and refreshed strands!
