How to Update Your Ombré for Short Hair this Spring
1. New Hue
If you’ve already got lightened ends, you can get to just about any other color! We always suggest semi or demi-permanent dyes when going for a wacky new hue. We’re thinking something in an Easter egg theme! Maybe robin’s egg blue, or a gorgeous hot pink.
2. Bleach Bath
Take all your hair just one or two shades lighter with a bleach bath. This isn’t literally bathing in bleach, just to get that clear: When it comes to hair, a bleach bath just means a low developer bleach mixed with shampoo or conditioner. You can DIY it if you are experienced with bleach, or go see your favorite stylist! The bleach bath will lighten all of your hair just one shade or two for a brand spanking new tone. When you’re done bleaching, make sure to add some hydration back into your hair. We like to use Suave Professionals Coconut Milk Infusion Intense Moisture Mask on short hair. It’s hydrating enough to make a difference but not weigh down your hair.
3. Ombré Balayage Combo
For a beachier effect, add a balayage to your ombré’d locks. The combination of the two together is an overall lighter shade on the bottom, but there is no clear line where it starts. This gives that beachy, sun-kissed effect that we love so much.
4. Dip-Dye Effect
For a totally opposite take on the subtle effect of balayage, why not try for a straight up dip-dye? This is easy to do if your ombré is close to grown out. Instead of going for that subtle gradient from your natural hair color to blonde ends, a dip-dye gives you a defined line. This punky look is not for the faint of heart, and is edgy while hip at the same time.
5. Tone, and Tone Again
If your ombré is looking a little yellow around the edges, why not go for a cooler tone for spring? We love ashy blondes this year, as it’s a much more subtle take on the gray hair trend. If you don’t want to go for a whole toning experience you can neutralize some of the brassy tones with purple shampoo. Our favorite combination is Bed Head By TIGI Dumb Blonde Purple Toning Shampoo and Bed Head By TIGI Dumb Blonde Reconstructor Conditioner. Together these keep your blonde hair looking extra fresh and keep that brassiness away. You do need to keep in mind though that you’ll need to wash and rinse without letting the shampoo or conditioner in your hair for too long.
6. Ombré On Ombré
Hear us out on this one! If you have a blonde ombre, which you probably already do, why not dip dye just the ends? Having your normal ombre going on will keep the look from getting too ’90s.
